The Welsh Dresser (or
seld Cymraeg in Welsh) evolved in the homes of the ordinary people of Wales during the 18th Century, so it was typically made of Welsh Oak and was designed to display the crockery and mementoes of the owners to visiting guests. The large dressers in houses of the well-to-do in England however, were 'below stairs' items not intended for display to guests. They were typically made of pine and given a waxed or painted finish.
