A pinetum (pronounced pine-eet-um) is a collection of coniferous trees.
It is derived from a combination of the words pine and arboretum (meaning a collection of trees of all types). One of the largest pinetums in the world is Bedgebury Pinetum near Goudhurst, Kent which is open to the general public all year round.
However, Pinetum has also been adopted as the name of a Wiltshire-based company that manufactures pine furniture. Pinetum the company started in 1989 as a one-man manufacturing operation but, according to its website, has now expanded to employ over 120 people, making over 2000 different products. In recent years Pinetum’s production has expanded to include oak furniture, which now accounts for 70% of the company’s output. There are, as yet, no reports that the company plans to address this change by altering its name to Arboretum!
The range and quality of Pinetum’s products are similar to those of other UK manufacturers and suppliers, such as Devonshire Pine, Sussex-based CPW and Kettle Containers from Northamptonshire.
