The word stool originally applied to
any form of seat and has similar roots in Old English, German and Goth languages. It was only later, from around the early part of the 13th Century, when the introduction of the word chair from France relegated stool to meaning a seat without arms or a back.
Whatever its origins, there are still applications where a stool is far more useful than a chair. It is much more difficult for example, trying to play a piano, sit at a bar or use a dressing table from a chair rather than a stool.
