Kettle Victorian Painted Pine Seven Drawer Chest:
KT Victorian Hand Carved Painted Bedroom Furniture
The Victorian Collection is a fully assembled range of furniture constructed of solid pine. It is painted and then completed with a lightly distressed finish.

Quality features include dovetail joints in drawer construction and the use of timber panelling for drawer bases and cabinet backs. Doors and large panels are decorated with curved mouldings, each finished with hand carved embellishments. These design motifs are repeated on cabinet edges and elsewhere.

This is a fully assembled range although some larger items such as beds and wardrobes may be partially dismantled to facilitate delivery.

Knots are the marks where a limb or branch has been cut off when trees are converted into planks.  In new timber, nutrients in the form of resin may continue to pass through these points for some considerable time, causing 'bleeding' through to the surface.  This is a natural process and is more noticeable with painted furniture.

1901 The Linen Press and the Chest of Drawers

In the days before the invention of the heated iron for smoothing out sheets and clothing, a similar effect was achieved by placing items between boards and pressing the boards together.  The equipment used was known as a linen press which, by the 18th Century, had evolved into a kind of wardrobe with drawers in the bottom half, similar to a chest of drawers, and a cupboard for the top half.

Perhaps the last people to use the linen press principle were sailors of the Royal Navy, who used to put seven folds into their bellbottom trousers and then press them by placing them under their mattress overnight.

The Amish religious sect in North America is known for its pursuit of humility (Demut) and rejection of ostentation (Hochmut).  These values are reflected in Amish furniture which is popular because of its solid construction and simple styling.  However, the original Amish furniture had a painted finish that was often decorated with flowers in styles reflecting the settlers German origins.  The plain styling and unpainted finish that is now regarded as typically Amish, was actually based on the furniture made by Welsh emigrants living near the Amish in Pennsylvania.
