The difference between Sideboards and Dressers
The distinction between sideboards and dressers is sometimes confused, but
dressers would traditionally have been found in kitchens where food was dressed or prepared, whereas
sideboards were used for food that was ready to be served to diners.
Sideboards first came into widespread use during the 19th Century when the growing wealth of the Middle Classes meant they could afford houses with separate dining rooms. In times past, hygiene standards were different to today and many early sideboards also included a cupboard for a chamber pot in addition to being a place from which food was served!
Sideboards were typically upwards of 6ft long during and prior to the Edwardian era, but as houses became smaller (according to the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, houses are now half the size they were 80 years ago) sideboards also became smaller. Many modern sideboards are around 4ft 6in long.
At Right Price Furniture we sell contemporary and traditional styles in a variety of sizes, so it is possible to create that desirable period look without squeezing you against the wall! There is also a choice of materials, from rustic oak or
shabby chic painted to contemporary oak, pine and painted styles.
