Describing an occasional or side table as a console table is relatively recent, only occurring since the 1920s. The word, as applied to furniture, originally appeared in mid 18th Century France where a console was a bracket of carved human figures supporting a cornice or shelf. This is derived from the verb
console, meaning to offer solace, comfort – or support.
Its application to some styles of occasional table relates to them being used as a ‘support’ for the newly-invented phonographs and radiograms or wireless sets of the inter-war years. Presumably this is also the origin of later terms such as control console or computer console.
The side table or console table can have practical applications, such as a place to stand telephones, drinks tray and so forth, or decorative applications. These might include collections of family photographs, a stand for a particularly prized trophy or ornament or perhaps a display of flowers or dried plants and grasses. A trawl through the internet will show many side tables with a large mirror fixed behind them that both enhances any display and adds a feeling of space and volume to the room.
