Lamp tables: highly versatile
Many of our lamp tables are highly versatile pieces: they can be used as end tables for sofas, bedside tables in the bedroom - or simply to hold lamps. Such small items of furniture can transform a harsh, sparsely furnished, room into something altogether more appealing and inviting. Choose from oak, pine or
painted lamp tables or styles in dark wood or painted finishes. All our lamp tables are from top manufacturers such as
Devonshire Pine, and
CPW Furniture.
Origins of Lamp Tables
Mention lamp tables and most people will think of something at the end of a sofa adorned with some sort of electric light. It forms an attractive part of the room's interior and the lamp itself provides mood lighting. It is easy to forget that lamp tables were originally much more important than simply a decorative element to the room.
Before the invention and widespread availablility of electric light, most homes used oil lamps to provide lighting. This situation continued in some rural areas of the UK into at least the 1960s. The oil lamp was typically between 18in and 2ft high and would be placed on the kitchen or
dining table for meals, reading newspapers, children doing homework and so forth. If good light was needed next to an easy chair or sofa, the lamp would have to be moved close. A small
side table of some sort on which to place the lamp was therefore a very useful item.
Lamp tables were therefore an important item of furniture in the pre-electrification era. During the 1950s and 1960s, interior designers made great efforts to eliminate all unecessary items and decoration. Light, space and simple clean lines were their watchwords. Because every room had bright electric ceiling lights, there was no need for lamp tables and there was a decline in their popularity.
Today however, even fans of contemporary minimalist style enjoy the amenity of having small lamp tables or end tables strategically placed in the room. At Right Price Furniture we try to offer a broad selection of lamp tables in contemporary and traditional styles and in a choice of materials, including oak, pine and painted. We
should have a lamp table for your Tiffany lamp, Anglepoise or even an oil lamp!
