The terms "dressing table" and "vanity table" are often used interchangeably. A dressing table (or vanity table if you prefer) is a piece of furniture where a person, generally a female, applies her "toilette." A toilette is the French word for the process of grooming, fixing one's hair, putting on make-up and getting dressed. Primarily It was the aristocratic and royal women, who used Dressing Tables.

The actual term "dressing table" was conceived as early as the 17th century in acknowledgement to petite tables that had two or three drawers. Cabinet makers would build a dressing table so that the fittings could be hidden when the table was not being used. Some of the dressing tables were rather complex and had folding tops and a basin drawer, where water was received from a cistern. There was drawers for grooming items such as razors, another drawer for combs, and a separate compartment for toothbrushes and finally a place for powder boxes.

The dressing table came into mainstream fashion in the early 18th century, and it consisted of a small table that featured several drawers. A vanity or dressing table is defined as a table that has secret panels or handle drawers, a round or oval padded stool for the lady to sit on, a vanity mirror and/or wing mirrors and various separate top modules.
