At the end of the 17th Century, glassmakers developed ways of making larger panes of glass without distortion.  The most obvious consequence of this was a change in the design of house windows but, in the furniture world, the new larger panes of glass facilitated the introduction of the Vitrine or glass display cabinet (from the French word vitre, meaning pane of glass).  With collections housed behind glass, it meant that bain of all collectors, dust, could be reduced or eliminated.  Early display cabinets usually housed things such as plates, china, silverware or gold, but todays collections and displays are as individual as their owners.

It is personal touches such as these that make a house into a home.  Collections of any kind say much about the occupier and what better way to display them than a purpose-built cabinet.  The skill is in choosing furniture that is attractive yet does not overpower the collection it is intended to display.
