A brief history in Dining Tables
The word '
table' was derived from the Latin word tabula, which means a board, a plank, or a flat piece. In the Middle Ages, upper class Britons and other European aristocrats in castles or large manor houses dined in the Great Hall. The family would sit at the head table on a elevated platform, with the rest of the population positioned in order of decreasing rank away from them. Tables in the great hall would often be long trestle tables with benches. The sheer amount of people in a Great Hall meant it had a busy, bustling atmosphere.
Over time, the nobility took more of their meals in the parlour, and the parlour became, functionally, a dining room (or was split into two separate rooms). It also migrated further away from the Great Hall, often accessed via grand ceremonial staircases from the dais in the Great Hall. Dining in the Great Hall eventually became something that was reserved for special occasions.
Towards the beginning of the 18th Century, a pattern started to emerge where the ladies of the house would withdraw after dinner from the dining room to the drawing room. The gentlemen would remain in the dining room having drinks. The dining room took on a more masculine tone as a result. As time progressed into Victorian times, people were often so repressed, that not only was the visual image of a female ankle considered shocking, even the sight of table legs was considered unseemly and indecent! Table legs were also required to be kept covered and out of sight; after all, they were legs!
Modern Dining
In recent times a
dining room table is normally close to the kitchen for convenience in serving, although in medieval times it was often on a different floor level. The most common table shape is generally rectangular with two armed end chairs and an even number of un-armed side chairs along the sides, refereed to as a "Trestle Table".
The dining room would be used only on Sundays, with other meals being eaten in the kitchen. Often tables in modern dining rooms will have a removable leaf to allow for more people present on those special occasions without taking up extra space when not in use.
Although the "regular" family dining occurrence is at a solid wood table or some sort of kitchen area, some select to make their dining rooms more comfortable by using couches or comfortable chairs.
3 Top Tips on Matching Dining Table and Chairs.1. The first thing is to measure the table and chairs. The chairs must easily slide under the table and have enough room for a seated guest's legs. Check the width as well as the height, especially for oak tables with corner legs that the chairs must fit between comfortably.
2. Match one element of an oak dining set to your décor. If you have a modern home and a rustic dining table, choose cloth or leather covered contemporary chairs to tie the designs together.
3. Balance the incompatible elements. For example place two leather backed chairs at both the head and foot of the table and the wood chairs along the sides. If you have two low-backed chairs and six high-backed, place the low chairs across from each other at the centre of the table.
Naturally you can just save yourself time and effort, and buy a new Oak dining set. There are plenty of styles and choices available and you probably wont find a cheaper oak dining sets anywhere else.
