Oak Chair Styles

Chairs were originally a status symbol.  They were of such great importance that they even influenced the English language with phrases and titles that still exist today such as 'chairing a meeting' or being elected chairman.  The styles of chair have since become as diverse as the people who used or made them.  For example, any dining chair with arms is called a carver chair, yet the name is said to have derived from the style of chairs taken with him to America on the Mayflower by Englishman John Carver, later the first governor of the Plymouth colony. Windsor chairs were a style of chair made in and around Windsor, Berkshire and are characterised by the legs and back being fixed into the seat.  

In the 1960s, James Bond villains acquired a propensity for high-backed revolving chairs in which they could dramatically swivel around to confront their victims.  It was a trend set by Dr No in 1962 when the chair used was one made by High Wycombe furniture manufacturers E Gomme and sold under the modest claim of being ‘the world’s most comfortable chair.’
