CPW Ashdown Bedroom Collection
The Ashdown range of fully assembled furniture from manufacturers CPW exhibits many quality features - such as dovetail drawer joints - and is slightly different in that it is made from ash rather than the more familiar oak.

Ash is a native British hardwood, noted for its shock-resistant properties.  When fashioned into the clean lines and simple styling of the Ashdown range it results in a contemporary collection of furniture that has a light, fresh feel about it.

It is a fully assembled range although some larger items such as beds and wardrobes may be partially dismantled to facilitate delivery.

Please note: Much of the hardwood used for furniture manufactured in Asia may be described locally as Oak. While its appearance, density and durability is almost identical to oak, sometimes this timber is actually from the Ash (Fraxinus) family. In order to be as accurate as possible, we therefore market this furniture as being made from Ash, even though the manufacturer’s packaging may say Oak.

0802 Ash Furniture Fact

One of the chief qualities of ash and ash timber is that it is shock resistant.  This means it can withstand movement and vibration without splitting or cracking as easily as some timbers.

This quality meant that ash wood was traditionally reserved for making such things as wheel spokes for wagons and handles for tools such as hammers and axes.

Also as it can be burnt ‘green’ without seasoning or drying, it was also popular as firewood.

1901 The Linen Press and the Chest of Drawers

In the days before the invention of the heated iron for smoothing out sheets and clothing, a similar effect was achieved by placing items between boards and pressing the boards together.  The equipment used was known as a linen press which, by the 18th Century, had evolved into a kind of wardrobe with drawers in the bottom half, similar to a chest of drawers, and a cupboard for the top half.

Perhaps the last people to use the linen press principle were sailors of the Royal Navy, who used to put seven folds into their bellbottom trousers and then press them by placing them under their mattress overnight.
