Core Amalfi Antique Waxed Effect Pine Furniture
The Amalfi Range is a self-assembly collection of furniture. It is made of solid pine, features dovetail drawer joints and is produced in a rustic, Mexican style. The whole is completed in an antique wax finish.
Features of the Amalfi styling include black metal handles and exposed black metal hinges so typical of the Mexican and Spanish Colonial styles.
1901 The Linen Press and the Chest of Drawers
In the days before the invention of the heated iron for smoothing out sheets and clothing, a similar effect was achieved by placing items between boards and pressing the boards together. The equipment used was known as a linen press which, by the 18th Century, had evolved into a kind of wardrobe with drawers in the bottom half, similar to a chest of drawers, and a cupboard for the top half.
Perhaps the last people to use the linen press principle were sailors of the Royal Navy, who used to put seven folds into their bellbottom trousers and then press them by placing them under their mattress overnight.

Mexico was originally governed by its indigenous civilisations such as the Olmec, the Maya and the Aztecs. But in 1521 the country was colonised by Spain. Mexico remained a Spanish colony for 300 years until it regained its independence in 1821. It is not surprising that, after 300 years of Spanish control, Mexico had adopted many of the fashions or styles of its European rulers. These included obvious features, such as the language, but also less obvious things such as a similarity in the style of furniture. A casual study of Spanish Colonial furniture shows the styling shares many similarities to that of Mexican furniture. The native Mexican people adapted the style to their own tastes with, for example, the use of bold metal fittings demonstrating the skills of the country’s craftsmen in metalworking.
