1803 Splat?
‘Splat’ may be a word that is most familiar to fans of Batman and other comic strip superheroes, but it is also a term used in furniture making. A splat is the vertical middle section of a wooden chair back. It is usually styled in one of several different forms, such as scrolled or cartwheel. Our selection of wooden chairs is well and truly diverse. 0403 Stripped Pine
Towards the end of the 1960s, it was realised that much of the dark Victorian furniture from farmhouse and country cottage sales was actually pine furniture under generations of dirt and wax polish. If this Pine furniture was cleaned back to the bare wood it had an attractive light colour, which had been mellowed by age.
The age of stripped pine furniture had arrived. Perhaps a note of passing interest is that this is how our supplier CPW or Country Pine Warehouse started in business. The company sourced antique or Victorian pine furniture, stripped it and sold it on. This explains CPW's expertise today in manufacturing traditional styles of furniture in solid pine.
