There are around 12 varieties of oak in existence, and each has its own type of markings and grain. That is why no 2 pieces of solid Oak furniture may look the same. For example, two different types of oak can react very differently when exposed to manufacturing and finishing materials.

Contemporary solid Oak furniture...
Oak has been a favoured material for furniture around the world for many years. Traditionally, there have been many, many uses for Oak over the years due to its natural strength, beauty and durability. Some of the uses for Oak have been ship building, construction and – of course – furniture. Even the smaller branches and twigs are utilised.
Oak has a history of being used in ceremonial and commemorative plantings over the years, too. It has a rich and varied history as a durable, strong and naturally beautiful material.
Contemporary Solid Oak furniture...
Solid Oak has been imported into Britain from the United States since the start of the 20th century. The furniture that was produced then was of the type that is commonly identified with the Arts and Crafts movement when it was at its peak. The solid Oak furniture produced then had sharp lines, exposed joints and mostly had a varnished finish. That type of furniture had a huge influence on the type of Contemporary solid Oak furniture that is available now.
After the First World War, solid Oak was in short supply across Europe. Oak furniture was still being produced, but it was lighter in weight and used a mixture of different types of wood due to the shortage of solid Oak. Subsequently, in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s solid Oak furniture became less popular as consumers became more interested in a new material that became available in furniture manufacture – plastic. Plastic was a modern commodity in a post-war world.
The 1980’s saw a rise in the popularity of solid Oak furniture once more, as consumers came to associate plastic with garden furniture, and realised that Oak furniture was stronger, more durable and timeless. Contemporary solid Oak furniture represented better value for money, even if it was more expensive at that time. This period coincided with a time when furniture manufacturers began to produce furniture which combined other, more inexpensive, materials such as MDF and softwoods – it meant that they could supply a cheaper product to the marketplace.
Our contemporary solid Oak furniture is always made from 100% solid Oak. As our Oak comes from a plentiful and sustainable source, our craftsmen are able to design and manufacture beautiful contemporary solid Oak furniture at extremely reasonable prices. We don’t ever use MDF, veneer or chipboard in our furniture – just 100% solid Oak.
Contemporary furniture manufactured from solid Oak is a great choice for any home. Our stunning furniture is hand-crafted to last a lifetime. It can even be updated by being sanded, re-finished and refurbished, thus providing great value for money.

To make sure your contemporary solid Oak furniture lasts...
When you have chosen the stunning pieces of contemporary solid Oak furniture that you want, you will also want to ensure that it lasts and lasts. And there are several simple steps you can take to make sure that happens:
When considering where to place your furniture, it’s a good idea to leave a gap of approximately 1” between the back of your furniture and the wall. This will help to ensure that the air flow keeps your temperature at the optimum temperature.
It is vital that you don’t position your contemporary solid Oak furniture directly in front of an air conditioning unit or radiator. The change in temperature could cause excessive dryness and cracking in your solid Oak furniture. Oak is, of course, a natural material and a certain amount of movement should be expected, but excessive movement could be a problem that is caused by furniture not being placed in the best position.
When placing contemporary solid Oak furniture directly on to a solid wood floor then it’s advisable to place protective felt underneath the legs or feet of the furniture. This will help to protect the furniture and the floor underneath it.
Oak is a natural material, and a certain amount of colour fade should be expected over time. Excessive colour fade can happen if solid Oak furniture is placed close to sunlight and lamps. To help prevent this, try to periodically rearrange household lamps and other items, so that your contemporary solid Oak furniture retains an even colour.
Prolonging the life of your contemporary solid Oak furniture...
When you’ve taken the time to choose the right contemporary solid Oak furniture, then it’s natural that you will want it to last years. Some periodic maintenance can really help to prolong the life of your new furniture. This only needs to be done every three months, initially, and then it becomes far less of a requirement as time goes by. In return for a little simple maintenance you will be rewarded with a beautiful piece of contemporary solid Oak furniture that will remain a timeless classic in your home.
Always be sure to follow the accompanying care instructions on the documentation you received when your furniture was purchased. Furniture with a lacquered finish: Clean once a week with a damp cloth, without detergents, and then dry with a soft lint free cloth. Furniture with a waxed finish: Apply a high quality furniture wax to your furniture every six months. Do remember that furniture polish is not a wax, and even though it may effectively clean your solid Oak furniture, the best way to prolong the life of your solid Oak furniture is to apply wax every six months.
Furniture with an oil finish: Apply a high quality boiled layer of Linseed or Danish oil to your solid Oak furniture.
This will help the Oak to stay water resistant, but remember that Oak is never waterproof – so ensure you mop up any spills immediately to prevent staining. After the first year you can reduce the frequency of adding oil to every six months.
Oak is a natural product, and no two pieces of solid Oak furniture will age in the same way – this adds to the character of the wood, and the individuality of every piece of contemporary solid Oak furniture. If your furniture needs a thorough clean then a solution such as Murphy’s Oil Soap is good for removing dirt and wax. But please remember to read the instructions carefully and always refinish afterwards.
To help maintain drawers try rubbing a candle on the runners to keep them operating smoothly.
This is a simple but very effective solution. Always use felt-backed or natural wood coasters for setting drinks down on your solid Oak furniture. Finally, when you’re applying any finish to your piece of solid Oak furniture, please remember to test an inconspicuous area first, and always check compatibility with previous products that may have been used on your furniture. Then relax and enjoy the natural beauty and durability of your contemporary solid Oak furniture.
Contemporary Solid Oak Furniture...
Our solid Oak furniture is made from American White Oak. This Oak is widespread throughout Eastern USA. The white oak group comprises many species, of which about eight are commercial.
American White Oak is similar in colour and appearance to European Oak. The sapwood of American White Oak is light-coloured and the heartwood is light to dark brown. White Oak is mostly straight grained with a medium to course texture, with longer rays than red Oak, so this gives the white Oak more distinctive grain markings.
This makes it all the more ideal in manufacturing beautiful solid Oak furniture. A hard and heavy wood with medium bending and crushing strength, American White Oak is low in stiffness, but very good in steam bending. Southern white oak is faster grown with wide growth rings, and tends to be harder and heavier.
The heartwood is resistant to decay, extremely resistant to preservative treatment, and the sapwood is moderately resistant to treatment. And it’s ideal for manufacturing our solid Oak furniture ranges.
American White oak is readily available in the USA, and is used widely because of the amount of options it offers, and its suitability for manufacturing solid Oak furniture. It’s also one of the most exported materials in the USA because of this.
American White Oak is also used in construction, flooring, architectural joinery, exterior joinery, mouldings, doors, kitchen cabinets, panelling, railway sleepers, timber bridges, barrel staves and caskets. White oak can vary in colour, texture, characteristics and properties according to the growing region. It’s always recommended that manufacturers work closely with suppliers so that the wood used is specific to the needs of the product.
The White Oak tree...
White oaks can vary in size and form, according to species and soil conditions, some are unsuitable for timber production, but others vary in height from 15m to 30m, well-grown American white Oaks having a clear cylindrical bole of up to 15m with a diameter of about 1.0m.
American White Oak...
Although it generally resembles European Oak, American white Oak has a more variable colour, and this can range from pale yellow-brown to pale reddish-brown, sometimes with a pinkish tinge. The grain is generally straight, and the texture can vary; from coarse to medium coarse.
The quality of the Oak depends a lot on the conditions of growth. Slow-grown north white Oak is usually lighter in weight than the Oak grown in southern states.
The Appalachian Mountains used to provide much of the mild white oak used most commonly for furniture and cabinet-making. Southern white Oak is usually fast grown, and its wide growth-rings are relatively coarse and more suited to constructional use.
White Oak weighs around 770 kg when dry. American White Oak has a tendency to dry slowly, and compares closely with European Oak in strength, hence its suitability in producing solid Oak furniture. American White Oak compares favourably with European oak in general strength but on the whole, its higher density provides rather higher strength which makes it extremely durable.
American White oak has variable working properties, according to the rate of growth. Our slow-grown white Oak is easier to work with than fast-grown. The timber can be glued, stained and polished and takes nails and screws well.
Our beautiful ranges of contemporary solid Oak furniture...
We make contemporary solid Oak furniture that is built to last. We only ever use the very highest quality American White Oak from sustainable sources. Our dining, living and bedroom ranges are designed and hand-crafted by master craftsmen who understand Oak and know exactly how to work with it as a material in furniture manufacture. Our craftsmen only use 100% solid Oak and never, ever use MDF, veneer or chipboard.
When you are comparing our ranges with those of others, then it’s always useful to remember that our furniture is hand-crafted from 100% solid Oak. Other manufacturers may say that their range is made from oak, but this description can very often mask that fact that the furniture is a combination of Oak and a soft wood, glued together and finished with an Oak veneer or even a particle board such as MDF.
Our furniture contains nothing but solid Oak. That’s our guarantee to you. Contemporary solid Oak furniture is more popular and sustainable than it ever was. Oak is an ideal natural material for furniture, compared to other woods such as Pine. This is because Oak is a hardwood, compared to Pine which – although cheaper in price – is a soft wood and bears no comparison in terms of quality and durability.
Our contemporary solid Oak furniture ranges vary in design, style and finish. Every drawer has dovetail joints, every back and base is built from 100% solid Oak and every door and drawer is finished with the highest standard of handle. Our beautiful contemporary solid Oak furniture is always hand-crafted by master craftsmen with Oak supplied from a sustainable source. Whether it’s a chest of drawers, bed, table or a wardrobe there are some important features that are reflected in every single piece of our contemporary furniture – our customers can relax knowing that they are getting the very best in design, manufacture and finish at the very best prices.
