Furniture FactErcol was a famous British furniture brand of the 1950s and 1960s and indeed still continues to this day. The company’s unusual name was derived from its founder, Lucian Ercolani who was born in Italy and came to the UK as a small boy in the late 1800s when his father, a picture framer, emigrated to Britain looking for work.
Ercolani pioneered the use of elm as a furniture wood after managing to season the timber sufficiently to avoid its characteristic shrinkage and warping problems.
