Furniture finishes on PD Global ranges

There are up to 11 different finishes that can be specified on some furniture ranges available from the manufacturer PD Global. This can be a bewildering level of choice so, to help simplify matters, this is a more detailed explanation of what is on offer.

Raw or ITW (In The Wood)

This means the wood has been seasoned and then made into furniture. It has no protective or decorative coatings of any kind. In this state it can be finished by the customer in a preparation of their own choosing. Left unfinished it will be susceptible to the marks left by normal everyday use, such as the natural grease from hands.

Wax or Lacquer

These finishes have a similar level of shine and colour tone. Wax is the more flexible coating and is better able to absorb the knocks and scratches of everyday use. Ideally this furniture should be wax polished every six months or so to maintain its appearance. Lacquer is more susceptible to scratchmarks, yet offers a slightly better level of protection against liquid spills and only requires dusting with a clean soft cloth to maintain its appearance.

Abbeywax and Chestnut (PT3)

This is a slightly darker tone than the standard wax or lacquer finishes, described as ‘toasted’ by the manufacturer. The Abbeywax is a coloured wax coating; Chestnut adds a protective lacquer over the top of this colouring.

Milkwood (PT7) and Milkwood Contrast (PT4)

The Milkwood finish is a uniform cream colour applied over all external surfaces of the furniture. Milkwood Contrast retains a wood finish on all horizontal surfaces, such as dresser tops and chair seats. The wood surfaces can be specified with a lacquer or waxed finish.

Antique Ivory (PT6) and Parchment (PT1)

These finishes are in a similar cream colour to the Milkwood finishes. Whereas the Milkwood has a uniform colouring, the Antique Ivory shows patches of exposed wood on leading edges. The Parchment finish exhibits a heightened level of distressing and patination.

Old Lace (PT2) and Buttermilk (PT5)

These finishes are both in a pale camel or khaki drill tone. The Old Lace finish has a light ‘patination’ coating over the top of this base colour. The Buttermilk has a heavier degree of patination and greater levels of distressing to edges, corners and surfaces in general.
