Whilst Americans use the term dresser to refer to a chest of drawers (see our Chest of Drawers category) dressers are primarily designed for holding kitchen or dining utensils and equipment in a dining room or kitchen setting. Sideboards have a similar function, but where dressers were for storage or display of items, the main purpose of sideboards was as a convenient place in the dining room from which to serve food.

Sideboards have existed for hundreds of years but they first gained widespread popularity in the 19th Century when the increasingly affluent middle classes began to have houses with separate dining rooms.
