Background
When it comes to furniture, the look was very much based on geometric patterns of straight lines and bold curves. Intricate detailing was definitely out in favour of a minimalist approach, which was regarded as being modern. Remember, the technique of streamlining trains, planes and cars was a new phenomenon and a highly visual manifestation of the new scientific world. Interior design was reflecting the zeitgeist of the time.
Original Art Deco pieces can be found, but many of these are either hideously expensive or just plain hideous. Unless the intention is to create museum-like authenticity, the best option therefore is to carefully select from the contemporary furniture that is easily available and reinforce the look with carefully chosen accessories.
Options available
Of the furniture available at Right Price Furniture, the
Convex ranges of bedroom and dining room furniture are perhaps the most strongly in keeping with the Art Deco look. The combination of straight lines and curves, dark wood and even ‘streamlined’ handles all contribute to the look.
For the bedroom, the
Metro range could pass as ‘thirties furniture, while the
Wealden range of dining and living room furniture also includes some items that have an Art Deco feel. Admittedly they are not perfect reproductions, but could still be an acceptable substitute, particularly if fitted with more appropriate ‘period’ handles.
The extensive range of chairs that can be searched through the
Chairs category, includes many contemporary designs that are almost identical to designs found in the Art Deco period.
