Sustainable furniture suppliesFrom time to time we receive enquiries as to whether our furniture is from sustainable timber supplies. Now, it might be easy to dismiss such concerns as those of tree-hugging hippies but, unlike climate change, the indisputable facts about the rainforest are these:
- The Amazon rainforests produce over one-fifth of the world’s oxygen - Every 9 and a half months an area the size of Britain is lost- In 49 years the Amazon will look like the Sahara, at current rates So yes, we do try to ensure our furniture is from sustainable sources – foresters that grow as much timber as they harvest – by using reputable furniture suppliers. For example, when we began selling the

Pine and Oak furniture
Pine and oak furniture has been sold in Britain for hundreds of years. Traditionally oak was harvested from native British woodlands and the much cheaper pine was imported from Scandinavia. British oak woodlands were decimated by the demands of two World Wars and faster-growing pines were planted in the 50s and 60s to make up the shortfall in timber stocks as quickly as possible.
Today, thanks to easier world trade conditions, timber or finished timber products can be moved more easily around the globe. This has allowed oak furniture to be imported to the UK from various countries. At home, the decline in the strategic importance of timber stocks has enabled conservation to take a higher priority in tree planting. Since the 1980s, broadleaves such as oak have been planted in preference to conifers such as pine. This does not mean there is going to be a shortage of pine for funiture in the future, simply that it is grown in the European countries where it is a naturally occcuring species rather than one that has been introduced. It will still be possible to buy a pine wardrobe or a pine dresser for many years to come.
Both pine and oak are an abundant species found in many parts of the globe. This means that furniture made from either of these materials is more likely to have come from sustainable sources than furniture made from some tropical hardwoods such as mahogany.
